AN EMPEROR COMES TO CONNECTICUT
Emperor Karl, the last monarch of Austria-Hungary is coming to Middletown, Connecticut. Not the Emperor physically, but a museum archive dedicated to his life and work. The Emperor Karl Archive of North America is a comprehensive collection of images, artifacts, art, period photographs, and documents illustrating his extraordinary life. The collection is being housed in the school building of Queen of Apostles Academy on the campus of St. Sebastian’s Church in Middletown.
Emperor Karl (1887-1922) inherited the throne of Austria-Hungary in the middle of World War I. The twenty-nine year old monarch, who had nothing to do with the start of the war, was determined to end the bloody conflict. He devoted his short reign to negotiating peace, and he is therefore known as the “Peace Emperor.” He instituted social reforms for the benefit of his people, though he never completed his plans, as he was removed from the throne by a revolution at the end of the war in November 1918.
Emperor Karl was a devout Catholic with a deep spirituality. He wished only to serve God and his people, and his example of holiness was so compelling that a process began to have him declared a saint. This initiative took a major step forward in 2004 when Pope St. John Paul II declared Emperor Karl “Blessed.” He is now a candidate for sainthood.
The Emperor Karl Archive illustrates the monarch’s life, times, World War I, humanitarian work, and his deep faith and holiness. His wife, Empress Zita, who was born a Princess of Bourbon-Parma in Italy, was an extraordinary figure in her own right, and her cause for sainthood is now also being considered. They were a remarkable couple, and exemplary parents of a large family. The Archive thus highlights Blessed Karl’s many roles as leader of a nation, father of a family, Christian, and advocate for world peace and social justice. In today’s environment, he may be just the inspiration the world needs.
The Emperor Karl Archive will be formally dedicated on Sunday, October 11, 2026 with a Mass at St. Sebastian’s Church at 11 AM followed by a luncheon and presentation on Blessed Emperor Karl. It is anticipated that members of the Emperor’s family will attend the dedication.
